Pathogens in liquid helium feed lines of MRI machines at Charing Cross Hospital
MRI machines use superconducting magnets that require liquid helium to cool them down to extremely low temperatures. However, liquid helium can also harbour microorganisms that can survive and proliferate in cryogenic and space-like environments, such as psychrophiles, radiotolerant and radioresistant microbes, and microgravity-adapted microbes.
In 2023, a team of researchers from Imperial College London and the Schiller Foundation discovered a novel pathogen growing in the liquid helium feed lines of the MRI machines at Charing Cross Hospital. Paxman: And you claim that this is a purely fictional story, with no basis in reality. Is that correct?
Carpenter: That is correct, yes.
Paxman: Well, Mr. Carpenter, I'm afraid you are lying. And I have proof. [He pulls out a folder and opens it.] This is a classified document from the British Intelligence, which reveals the shocking truth behind your film. The truth is, The Thing is not an alien, but a product of Nazi experiments, conducted in a secret base in Antarctica, during the Second World War.

The Nazis were working on a project called Operation Eissturm, or Ice Storm, which involved the creation of a super-soldier, using genetic engineering and occult rituals. Lawyer: [To the witness] And what was the nature of their dispute?
Witness: [To the lawyer] Their dispute was over the patent rights of their products. However, we have received reports that you have been neglecting your duties, wasting our resources, and sabotaging our goals.
We have evidence that you have been using the yacht launchpad technology to smuggle illegal and unethical items, such as drugs, weapons, and human organs. We have evidence that you have been diverting our funds to finance your lavish and decadent lifestyle, such as gambling, drinking, and prostitution. We have evidence that you have been interfering with our experiments, destroying our equipment, and releasing our specimens.
We demand that you cease and desist from these activities immediately, and return to your obligations. We also demand that you provide us with a detailed report of your progress, and a plan of action for the completion of Project Hemostasis. Pippa was a young penguin who loved to explore. She was curious about everything and always wanted to learn new things. She liked to wander away from her colony and see what she could find. One day, she decided to go on an adventure to the other side of the iceberg. She quickly said goodbye to her parents and friends and set off.
As she walked, she saw many usual sights. She saw a group of seals sunbathing on a rock. She saw a flock of seagulls flying in the sky. She saw a whale spouting water from its blowhole. She was always amazed by the beauty and diversity of this icy landscape.
She reached the other side of the iceberg and saw something that she had never seen before. It was a bright red object, a big red flower. It was attached to a long green stem that came out of the snow.
Pippa was fascinated by it. She wondered what it was and how it got there. She decided to get closer and take a look.
She approached the red flower cautiously and sniffed it. It smelled sweet and fresh. She touched it gently with her beak. It felt soft and smooth. She nibbled it slightly. It tasted juicy and delicious. She liked it very much. She decided to eat some more.
She bit off a big chunk of the red flower and swallowed it. It tasted peppery, slimy and bitter. Her eyes watered, and she sneezed.
She felt a warm sensation in her stomach. She felt happy and relaxed. She ate some more. She felt even better.
She ate the whole flower. She felt wonderful, but stumbled slightly.
She looked around, dazed and saw that there were more red flowers nearby. She wanted to try them all. Dizzily, she ran towards them. She ate until she was full and satisfied. She felt sleepy and tired. She lay down on the snow and closed her eyes. She fell asleep, and did not wake up.
Four months later, a group of scientists came to the iceberg. They were studying the effects of climate change on polar regions. They saw the red flowers and recognized them as poppies. They wondered how they got there. They saw Pippa's frozen body and realized what had happened. They took Pippa's body and some poppies with them.
They learned that the poppies had been brought by a cargo ship that had crashed near the iceberg. The poppies had been part of a shipment of flowers for a wedding. The poppies had survived the crash and the cold and had grown. They had an unusually high concentration of opium, a substance that can cause euphoria and addiction in humans and animals. This was of considerable interest to their laboratory.
Pippa the penguin had died of genetically altered opium poisoning.

Patient: And what are you going to do with it?
Cleese: We are going to use it, Mr Smith. We are going to use it to cure you.
